Educational Requirements for Research
All individuals working in research at G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center (GVSMVAMC) are required to complete an education program consistent with the Department of Veteran Affairs regulations. The Research & Development Office will monitor completion and renewal of training requirements, unless otherwise noted.
All research personnel with VA-paid or Without Compensation (WOC) appointments, Research committees (RDC) and subcommittees (IRB and SRS) must complete:

This training is required prior to appointment and annually thereafter.VA Privacy and Information Security Awareness and Rules of Behavior VHA Privacy & Information Security (10176)
This training is required prior to appointment and annually thereafter.
Privacy and HIPAA Training VHA Privacy & HIPAA (10203)
This training is required prior to appointment and annually thereafterHuman Subjects Training: Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) .
This training is required prior to appointment then every three years thereafter.
Research personnel working in a lab at GVSMVAMC (on-site or off-site) must complete:
VA ORD Biosecurity: Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative Program (CITI) . Research which involves neither animals nor humans (i.e. cell lines if proposed research involved biohazards, radioisotopes, chemicals, bodily fluids and/or radiological procedures, hazardous substances or devices).
Additionally, personnel working with human and animal blood and tissues should complete the TMS Blood borne Pathogens SAH0406 training. Other CITI training may be assigned as needed. Annual safety training will be provided for staff working in research labs.
